A Basic Guide to Building Maintenance

Owning property comes with responsibilities, and, of course, we all want to protect such an investment, and if you are new to property ownership, here is a basic guide to essential building maintenance.

The Roof

By far the most important, the roof of your home protects the structure from the harsh elements, and you are advised to ask the expert roofers in Halifax to inspect your roof every year, looking specifically for:

  • Missing roof tiles
  • Blocked guttering – Regular cleaning is advised.
  • Fascia & Soffit
  • Flashing

An annual roof inspection will ensure that any minor issues can be repaired, thus avoiding costly roof repairs that are generally caused by lack of repair.

Exterior Walls

If your home is rendered or has a protective coating, this will add some protection. If your home is of brick, then it should be closely inspected and repointed where necessary, and a stone structure might also need some masonry work, which could be carried out by master stone masons.

Windows & Doors

If your doors and windows are of a timber variety, they will need regular repainting, or apply a couple of coats of stain, yet if your windows are uPVC or aluminium, there is maintenance necessary. Many homes in the UK still have the original softwood window frames, and sooner or later, you will have to replace them with double glazed units, which are never cheap, but it does offer a permanent solution to heat loss in the winter.

You should regularly inspect the exterior of your home, and should you notice anything unusual, call in your local builder and ask him to take a look.
